We know that preparation is often the part of a painting project that most people don't enjoy…. But, it is an essential step that makes all the difference to the result. Can I Just Paint Over Old Paint?

Whilst it may be tempting to just paint over old paint, most times you’ll achieve a much better finish if you remove the existing paint first, especially if you’re using a different product that may not adhere to the existing paint. If the current surface is cracked, peeling or flaking, a lick of paint over this won't hide it, in some cases, it will make it stand out even more. 

Can I Paint Without Prepping?

Yes, you can. But not if you want a finish you’ll be happy with. If the surface has cracked or peeling paint, it's dirty or there is dust & debris… if you just paint over this - it's not going to look great and it won't be long until you’re having to paint over it again. In the long run, proper preparation will save you time, energy and money. 

How Can I Paint Over Existing Paint Without Sanding? 

The only time you can paint over existing paint is if the surface is in very good condition and also if you’re using the same product to recoat or one that is compatible with the existing coat. If you are going to paint over existing paint, you may also need a primer.
