The Romantic Side of Paint

The Romantic Side of Paint

Colour Interior

A heart to heart with Studio Anagram

When perfect imperfections culminate to create intrigue and true expression. Haymes Paint Artisan collection is just that, a way to turn that ordinary wall into an exciting, eye-catching masterpiece. No one project looks the same and each product within the range has its own mesmerising effect.

We recently sat down with Akihito Tachibana (Tachi) from Studio Anagram who has been influential in introducing the Haymes Paint product in Japan. Tachi has a very artistic vision when it comes to his residential projects and told us he fell in love with the Haymes Artisan collection when he first caught a glimpse of “Yellow Trace” in an advertisement back in 2018. From this point on, Tachi’s love affair with Haymes Paint began.

A Love Letter to Haymes Paint

‘It was like sending a love letter to somebody you had fallen in love with at first glance.’

These were Tachi’s romanticisms when he first reached out to the Haymes family about Artisan, he wanted to be surrounded by it, even stating he desired to paint the entirety of his house in Haymes Artisan Collection Yellow Trace. From this point Tachi wanted to inspire innovation in design by introducing unique materials from around the world. This passion for the product has contributed to spreading a change in DIY culture in Japan.

The Tachi Process

Tackling an Artisan project can seem quite daunting, picking the right product and ensuring it blends with the space can be tough. Tachi says it is important to educate yourself about the artisan offerings before making your final decision. If you are struggling to choose, testing A5 (18cm) samples in the space will give you a great indication. Viewing the samples in different light and periods of the day is important to gauge the true feel but remember the samples will not be a true indication of exactly how your finish will look.

Before starting your project, he stresses the importance of practice. Prior to putting a brush or trowel to the wall make sure you have tested the application of the product. Depending on the product you are using there will be different methods for application. For example, the Artisan Surface collection requires the use of a trowel. Reiterating the importance of practice before commencing your project.

Capture your environment

Tachi finds a lot of inspiration for his projects from the natural surroundings of Japan. The recent project in Kagoshima is encompassed by a famous active volcano, called Sakurajima. This volcano erupts once every few years and the ash from the outburst can be seen on all sides of the stunning landscape of Kagoshima. He recently drew inspiration from this organic occurrence. He used Haymes Artisan Collection Surface, Industrial ‘Shale’ as it offers an industrial sensation replicating that sensation of volcanic ash, pairing furniture which has a natural mountainous shape like the surroundings of Kagoshima. So, when planning your project it's worth thinking about the natural environment and how you can bring those elements to life in your interior space.

Reflection of Light

Open living spaces play into the hands of the Artisan Surface range. The aggregates in Artisan Surface contribute to creating beautiful reflections of light. This reflection can make the home feel warm and larger than what it is. The Ariake project by studio anagram displays this in full. The use of Industrial in ‘Rocksalt’ on ceiling and walls works in favour of the open plan living layout, creating a sensation of grandeur. The house naturally responds to light and shade throughout the day.
