Step by step guide

Planning

Step 1 - Choose your colour

First choose your colour from the Haymes Paint colour range.Sample colour at home by ordering an A5 Colour Swatch or sample pot online, or pick one up at one of our Haymes shops or stockists.

Work out how much paint you’ll need with the Haymes Paint calculator, or ask your friendly Haymes shop or stockist.

Step 3 - Planning

Ensure you have all the required equipment on our downloadable checklist before you start. We recommend Haymes Paint Ultratrimfor painting doors and trims. 

Preparation

Step 1 - Clear the area

Remove all furniture and obstacles from the room and also lights/fittings if possible.

Step 2 - Protect other surfaces

Apply painting tape to the skirting boards, architraves, switches or powerpoints. Use drop sheets to cover the floors. 

Step 3 - Wash the Surface

Use Haymes Unikleen sugar soap and a cleaning sponge to wash away all dust and grime.

Step 4 - Patch or repair imperfections

Fill in any cracks, nail holes, or imperfections with an appropriate filler such asHaymes Gap Filler.

Step 5 - Sanding

Once dry, sand to remove any shine and achieve a smooth, even finish.

Painting

Step 1 - Painting doors

Brush the edges of the door before the face, then cut in the recesses of any panels. Be careful of drips. 

Step 2 - Rolling doors

Load up your roller with evenly distributed paint. Begin rolling in the centre of the door before laying off in light single strokes, top to bottom.

Step 3 - Painting trims

When painting trims, we recommend starting with the window frames first.

Step 4 - Paint remaining trims

Evenly apply the first coat to all remaining trims. Dry for at least 2 hours before the second coat.

Step 5 - Second coat - all

Apply a second coat to doors, trims, and windows using the same process. Remove masking tape before the paint dries completely.
