Show Me - How to Paint Interior Walls

DIY DIY Tips & How To Interior Painting

Whether you’re renovating an old house, updating a room or overhauling the style of your home, painting the walls is a great way to get a fantastic outcome and knowing how to paint a wall properly will ensure a long-lasting finish that looks great. Learn the best way to complete your project with these easy steps.

Planning

Step 1 - Choose your colour

Step 2 - Plan

Ensure you have all the required equipment on our checklist in the downloadable pdf guide before you start.

Preparation

Step 1 - Remove furniture

Remove all furniture and obstacles from the room and lights and fittings where possible.

Step 2 - Use sugar soap

Use Haymes Unikleen sugar soap and a scouring pad to wash away all dust and grime.

Step 3 - Add tape

Apply painting tape to the skirting boards, architraves, switches or powerpoints.

Step 4 - Patch any cracks

Patch or repair imperfections, cracks or nail holes with aninterior filler. Once the filler is dry, sand and dust down. Apply one coat ofHaymes Ultrasealto patched areas. Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours.

Painting

Step 1 - Cut in

Pour a small amount of paint into a pot. Cut in around the edge of your wall and around any powerpoints or switches..

Step 2 - Apply paint at an angle

Paint approximately 2-3 strokes at a 90 degree angle to the edge of the wall. Start 10mm off the edge and work into the corner. Smooth over with one long stroke.

Step 3 - Paint in a zig zag pattern

Fill your roller tray to two thirds level and load your roller. Work in a zig zag pattern of approx. 1 metre, backwards and forwards, until the area is covered.

Step 4 - Repeat

Repeat the process for the second coat. Ensure masking tape is removed before the paint dries completely.
