Founded in Ballarat in 1935, our business is borne out of Henry Haymes’ passion and his desire to provide Australians with the best quality paint they could buy. Since then, Haymes Paint has been passed through three generations of the Haymes family, with each building on that legacy.  

After 90 years, today Haymes Paint is a thriving wholly Australian-owned business with a nationwide presence, renowned and respected for the superior quality of its products. Our new, multi-million dollar state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ballarat, where it all began 90 years ago, demonstrates our capacity for market leading innovation alongside our proud history of bring industry-changing products to market.  

As a 100 per cent, Australian owned family business, Haymes Paint is proud to connect with the communities where we operate and support other family-owned businesses – be it the local paint specialist, a hardware store stockist, or the professional trade painting contractors who make Haymes Paint part of their every day.   

Today, Haymes Paint has grown to become the largest family owned paint brand in Australia employing more than 400 team members across operations, including our nationwide network of Haymes Paint Shops, PaintRight stores and 350 independent stockists.

Thomas Jefferson Haymes opens a paint contracting business, hardware and electrical supplies store in Ballarat.

1935

Henry Haymes went overseas to study different paint making techniques, then registers Henry Haymes Pty Ltd.

1955

1955

A bigger Ball Mill was purchased to meet with increasing demand. Henry Haymes passes away.

1967

1967

David Haymes, Henry’s son, joined the company as warehouse foreman. Eventually, he would take over the position of managing director, six years later.

1986

1986

Haymes Paint becomes major paint supplier of the National Trust of Victoria.

1988

1988

David and Jenny Haymes obtain 100% ownership of Henry Haymes Pty Ltd through a major share buyback.

1990s

Due to Haymes Paint growth, Manufacturing and Head Office move to Wendouree, Ballarat.

1995

Haymes Paint introduces it's first 'syndicated' colour system.

2000

Representing local manufacturing David Haymes meets with Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.

2004

Industry leading recycling and water saving initiatives were implemented in the manufacturing process.

2006

2006

New logo, an adaption of the Henry Haymes signature is introduced. David Haymes is inducted into Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

2008

David Haymes retires from the day-to-day operations handing over to the third generation of the Haymes family.

2011

Haymes Paint wins Australian Family Business of the Year.

2012

Haymes Paint is inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

2015

2015

Partnering with Melbourne football Club, Haymes Paint undertakes their first major sponsorship.

2016

Paving the way for the future, Haymes Paint invests in multimillion dollar upgrade to it's Ballarat manufacturing plant.

2018

Partnering with Japanese company Studio Anagram, the Artisan Collection is launched to the Japanese market.

2019

Haymes Paint becomes the largest Australian made and owned paint manufacturer following the acquisition of Dulux by Nippon Paint.

2020

Supporting local paint specialists across Australia IPSA (Independent Paint Specialists Australia) is launched.

David Haymes passes away. His legacy lives on through his children Matt, Tim, Belinda and her husband Rod.

Haymes Paint Shop’s state-of-the-art flagship store opens in Ballarat. The store features a dedicated 500 sqm showroom for design and retail customers as well as a separate area for professional tradespeople.

Production begins in our new $20m manufacturing facility. Haymes Paint is awarded Canstar Blue’s 'Most Satisfied Customers - House Paint' award for the 6th year in a row.

Ultra Premium Trimplus is awarded ABA100® Winner for New Product Innovation in The Australian Brand Awards 2024.
