Show Me - How to Paint Exterior Weatherboards

Step by step guide

Planning

Step 1 - Choose your colour

Preparation

Step 1 - Remove

Remove anything that restricts access to the walls, lay down drop sheets and securely position any ladders or trestles. Wash your surfaces thoroughly with Haymes Unikleen to remove all dirt and grime, then rinse and allow to dry.

Step 2 - Test

A quick tip to test the adhesion of your existing paint: cut an ‘X’ into the paint, apply adhesive tape over the top and remove If the tape removes any of the existing paint, you will need to remove all previous coats in the area by scraping and sanding back to a bare surface.

Step 3 - Remove flaking paint

If not, simply scrape off any flaking paint and sand all weatherboards back to a dull, smooth finish.

Step 4 - Spot prime

Spot prime any bare areas with Haymes Ultracover. Then fill in any holes or imperfections with an exterior grade filler. Gaps or cracks should be filled with Haymes Gap Filler.

Painting

Step 1 - First coat

The trick with painting exteriors is to start at the top, beginning with the gutters and fascia before progressing to the weatherboards.

Step 2 - Painting underside edge

To paint the boards, begin by brushing the underside edge before moving onto the face. It’s important to work horizontally and work on only one or two boards at a time, across the length of the board.

Step 3 - Second coat

Allow a minimum of 2 hours before applying the second coat using the same process as the first. The last step is to paint your trims.Haymes Ultratrimis perfect for contact areas such as windows and doors.
