What condition does your concrete need to be in
No concrete paint, regardless of whether it is a premium 2K epoxy or a single-component paving paint, will adhere to a poorly prepared, dirty, or structurally weak concrete surface. To ensure a lifetime of performance, your concrete substrate must meet several strict physical conditions before you apply any paint.
Curing Age
New concrete must be allowed to cure completely before painting. For standard concrete, this requires a minimum cure time of 28 days. If the concrete slab is thicker than 100mm, it must be left to dry for an additional week for every 25mm of thickness over 100mm. Trapping moisture inside an uncured slab will destroy paint adhesion.
Moisture Testing
Concrete is highly porous and can hold deep-seated water. To verify that your concrete is dry enough to paint, always perform a simple plastic sheet moisture test:
- Cut a 300mm x 300mm sheet of clear, heavy-duty plastic.
- Tape the plastic tightly to the concrete floor using high-adhesion tape, sealing all four edges completely.
- Leave the plastic in place undisturbed for at least 2 hours.
- Peel back the tape and examine the plastic. If condensation is visible on the underside of the plastic, or if the concrete beneath has darkened, the floor contains too much moisture.
- Allow the slab more time to dry and repeat the test until no moisture is visible. If a digital moisture meter is available, the concrete must read under 14% moisture content before you proceed.

Paint cannot adhere to smooth, steel-troweled concrete because the surface pores are closed. Smooth concrete (any surface smoother than 120-grit sandpaper) must be acid etched using a 10% citric or hydrochloric acid solution, or mechanically ground, to open the pores. Acid etching creates a texture similar to medium-grit sandpaper, which allows the paint to penetrate and lock into the concrete. Always pressure wash the etched concrete thoroughly to remove all acidic debris and concrete dust, and check for dust residue by pressing high-adhesion tape onto the dry floor. If any dust particles stick to the tape, repeat vacuuming and sweeping until the tape pulls away clean.
Contamination and Old Paint
All grease, wax, silicone, and oil must be completely removed from the concrete using a commercial detergent degreaser before etching. If the concrete has been previously painted, you must test the structural integrity and compatibility of the old finish:
- The Adhesion Test: Cut a light 'X' shape through the old paint down to the bare concrete, apply high-adhesion tape firmly over the cut, and pull it off sharply. If any paint peels up, the previous paint lacks structural integrity and must be completely removed by grinding or stripping before painting.
- The Compatibility Test: Sand a small inconspicuous area, apply one coat of the new floor paint, let it dry for 24 hours, and conduct another tape-adhesion test. If the tape removes the new paint or lifts the underlying layers, the old and new paints are chemically incompatible, requiring you to strip the surface back to bare concrete.
