Guide to Substrate and Paint System Versatility
Achieving a durable, professional finish across a diverse range of interior and exterior architectural surfaces requires a technical understanding of substrate behaviour and paint compatibility. Different building materials possess unique physical properties, varying from the high porosity of interior brickwork to the chemical extraction of tannin-rich hardwoods and the adhesion challenges of galvanised steel. Applying a generic paint system across these diverse surfaces often leads to premature film failure, peeling, or unsightly chemical bleeding.
Since 1935, Haymes Paint has manufactured premium paints in Ballarat, developing highly specialised, substrate-specific systems designed to withstand demanding Australian conditions. By combining meticulous physical diagnostic testing with advanced polymer chemistry, property managers, builders, and designers can specify paints with complete confidence.
Practical Diagnostic Protocols for Substrate Verification
Before selecting or applying any paint system, conducting rigorous physical diagnostics is essential to verify that the substrate is in a suitable condition to receive a paint film. Relying on visual inspections alone is a common cause of paint failure. Professional painters and specifiers utilise three industry-standard on-site diagnostics to ensure successful film adhesion.
X-Cut Adhesion Tape Test for Previously Painted Surfaces
When preparing to repaint older, previously painted walls, trims, or metals, verifying the structural integrity of the existing paint layers is critical. Applying high-performance water-based paints over a failing, poorly bound existing paint film will cause the entire system to pull away.
To execute the test, follow this systematic procedure:
- Select a small, inconspicuous area of the existing painted surface.
- Using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge, make two light cuts through the paint film down to the underlying substrate, forming an X shape with an angle of approximately 45°.
- Press a strip of high-tack adhesive tape firmly across the center of the X cut, smoothing it down with a finger to ensure complete contact.
- Grip the free end of the tape and pull it off sharply and cleanly at a 90° angle in a single, rapid motion.
- Inspect both the tape and the cut area. If any of the old paint lifts from the substrate or adheres to the tape, the existing paint system lacks structural integrity. It must be completely stripped, scraped, or high-pressure washed before applying any new paints.
Timber Water Penetration Test for Bare Hardwoods
New or weathered exterior timber contains natural oils, waxes, mill glaze, or atmospheric contaminants that block paint penetration. Applying a protective stain or paint to timber that cannot absorb liquid results in poor adhesion and rapid flaking.
To perform this diagnostic, splash several droplets of clean water onto the dry, bare timber surface. Observe the water for three to five minutes:
- If the water droplets remain beaded on the surface, the timber is not ready for painting. The wood must be prepared with a specialised treatment like Rapid Prep to open the timber grain and extract surface waxes.
- If the water is readily absorbed into the timber, darkening the wood fibres, the substrate is highly receptive and ready to receive a protective timber stain.
Concrete Moisture Plastic Sheet Test for Floor Slabs
Excessive moisture vapour escaping from concrete slabs is the primary cause of blistering and delamination in floor paints. Even if a concrete floor appears dry on the surface, trapped moisture will migrate upward and degrade the paint film.
To verify that a concrete slab is dry enough to paint:
- Cut a 300mm by 300mm sheet of clear, heavy-duty plastic.
- Lay the plastic sheet flat on a section of the clean, unpainted concrete floor.
- Seal all four edges of the plastic sheet tightly to the concrete using heavy-duty duct tape, ensuring no air can escape.
- Leave the plastic sheet in position for a minimum of 24 hours.
- Remove the tape and lift the plastic. If condensation droplets have formed on the underside of the plastic sheet, or if the concrete beneath has visibly darkened, the slab contains excessive moisture. The concrete must be allowed to dry further, or a specialised moisture barrier must be applied before painting. If an electronic moisture meter is used, the reading must register below 14% prior to paint application.
Target Substrates and High-Performance Paint Systems
Each building material presents specific mechanical demands that must be matched to the correct paint chemistry. Below are the pre-mapped, APAS-approved paint systems for five challenging structural substrates.
1. Interior Brick Feature Walls
Porous interior brickwork and mortar joints exhibit high, uneven suction that drains the binders from standard paints, resulting in a patchy, low-durability finish. Additionally, alkaline salts present in masonry can migrate to the surface and ruin the paint film.
To seal and finish interior brickwork:
- Preparation: Ensure the brickwork is completely cured for at least 28 days. Remove all loose mortar, dust, and efflorescence using a stiff wire brush.
- The System: Apply one coat of Acrylic Sealer Undercoat which is specifically formulated to block the high suction of porous brick and mortar, providing a uniform, sealed surface. Follow with two coats of Interior Expressions®. This ultra-premium paint is 99% VOC-free, under 1 g/L VOC, and low-odour, making it ideal for occupied interior spaces. It provides a highly washable, stain-resistant finish and is backed by a written 7-year mould and mildew protection guarantee.
2. Aged Enamel Trims and Woodwork
Older interior doors, skirtings, and window frames are often coated in traditional solvent-based enamels. These aged surfaces are exceptionally hard, glossy, and smooth, which prevents new water-based paints from adhering chemically or mechanically.
To update aged enamel trims without strong solvent odours:
- Preparation: Clean the trim thoroughly with a liquid sugar soap to remove grease and oils. Sand the entire surface thoroughly with fine-grit sandpaper to break the gloss and create a physical key. Conduct an adhesion tape test to verify soundness.
- The System: Apply Trimplus in accordance with the product's application instructions. This durable, non-yellowing, water-based acrylic enamel delivers a tough, impact-resistant finish with the convenience of water wash-up. Formulated with low-VOC levels, they are touch-dry in 20 minutes and can be recoated in just 2 hours, facilitating rapid project turnaround and room reoccupation.
3. Bare Exterior Cedar and Merbau
High-density hardwoods like cedar and merbau contain high levels of natural tannins and water-soluble extractives. When exposed to rain or water-based paints, these tannins bleed through the finish, creating dark-brown stains that ruin the aesthetic.
To finish bare exterior hardwoods:
- Preparation: New timber must be treated with Rapid Prep to extract surface tannins and open the wood fibres, followed by a thorough water rinse. If the wood has been left weathered for more than six weeks, use Wood Cleaner to remove greyed wood fibres and atmospheric dirt. Perform the water penetration test to confirm the grain is receptive.
- The System: Specifiers can choose between two premium water-based timber finishes depending on the desired aesthetic. For a highly durable, quick-drying stain that highlights the timber grain, apply two coats of Woodcare Dexpress Deck & Timber Stain. Dexpress is a water-based, long-lasting formula that can be recoated in 2 hours, allowing a complete two-coat system to be applied in a single day. Alternatively, for a premium, satin finish that shields wood from intense solar radiation, apply UVEX Finish, which offers advanced UV and mould resistance while preserving the wood's organic look.
4. Galvanised Steel Gates and Fences
Galvanised steel is treated with a protective zinc layer and often coated in factory passivation oils to prevent white rust. These chemical oils and the zinc itself repel standard acrylic paints, leading to rapid peeling and adhesion failure.
To secure ultimate rust protection on galvanised steel:
- Preparation: Clean the metal thoroughly with a specialised degreaser to remove all passivation oils, grease, and dirt. Solvent-wipe the surface and allow it to dry.
- The System: Apply one coat of Etch Primer (a chromate-free, water-based primer designed to chemically etch into smooth zinc and galvanised surfaces to secure maximum adhesion). Follow with two coats of UV Superior Enamel topcoat. Utilising advanced silicon alkyd technology, this premium topcoat provides outstanding weather defence and ultimate rust protection under direct Australian sunlight, maintaining its colour and gloss over the long term.
5. Covered Garage Floors
Garage floors are subject to intense mechanical stresses, hot tyres, oil spills, and constant foot traffic. Applying standard paving paints to covered car parking spaces leads to hot-tyre pick-up, where hot rubber tyres chemically bond to the paint film and tear it off the slab as the vehicle moves.
To protect covered concrete floors:
- Preparation: Concrete must cure for a minimum of 28 days. Smooth, power-trowelled concrete must be acid-etched with a hydrochloric acid solution to open the pores and create a texture resembling fine-grit sandpaper. Conduct the plastic sheet moisture test to ensure the slab is dry.
- The System: Apply two coats of QuickPave Garage Floor which is a specialised, self-priming solvent-based gloss paint engineered specifically to resist hot-tyre pick-up and fuel staining in covered or sheltered spaces. It is turps-washup, dries to a tough, cleanable gloss finish, and must be allowed to cure for 7 days before parking vehicles. Note that QuickPave Garage Floor is strictly for covered or sheltered areas; for exterior walkways, exposed driveways, or patios, use the water-based QuickPave Paving Paint system instead to ensure UV resistance.
