You can easily identify these metals by testing them with a standard household magnet. If the magnet sticks firmly, the metal is ferrous. Non-ferrous metals, including aluminium, brass, copper, and stainless steel, are non-magnetic and do not form red rust, though they may develop white oxidisation or dull tarnish over time.

Zinc-treated steel substrates require a closer inspection. Galvanised steel features a distinctive spangled or mottled silver-grey pattern created by hot-dip zinc dipping, which protects the steel beneath. Zincalume is an alloy finish consisting of aluminium, zinc, and silicon, presenting a smooth, matte-silver appearance. Zincanneal is a zinc-iron alloy finish that is matte-grey and has a slightly textured, highly paintable surface.

If the metal has been painted previously, you must evaluate the structural integrity of the existing finish before proceeding. To perform an Adhesion Test, lightly cut a small, neat 'X' into the existing paint film using a sharp utility knife. Apply a piece of strong adhesive tape firmly over the cut, rub it down to ensure complete contact, and pull the tape off sharply at a ninety-degree angle. If any paint flakes stick to the tape, the existing coating has failed and must be fully scraped back and sanded to bare metal.

If the paint passes the adhesion test, you must perform the Compatibility Test to ensure the new topcoat will not react with the old paint. Sand and clean a small, inconspicuous area, and apply one coat of the desired topcoat. Allow the paint to dry for twenty-four hours, then perform the tape adhesion test over the new coat. If the tape removes the paint, the new and old coatings are incompatible, meaning you must strip the surface back to bare metal before painting.

Choosing a primer for mild steel and wrought iron

Bare, unpainted mild steel and wrought iron are highly vulnerable to atmospheric moisture, requiring immediate priming once the surface has been cleaned and prepared. In structural applications, such as exterior staircases, structural columns, or decorative wrought iron balustrades, the metal must be protected with an exceptionally durable anti-corrosive barrier.

Apply two to three coats of MetalPlus Etch Primer, allowing thirty to forty minutes of drying time between coats if using the aerosol version, or forty to sixty minutes for the bulk liquid paint version. Clean up any brushes or rollers immediately using MetalPlus Brushable Enamel Thinner to keep your equipment in trade condition.

Priming aluminium to prevent paint peeling

Aluminium is widely used in residential architecture for window frames, outdoor furniture, and handrails due to its natural resistance to deep corrosion. However, its extremely slick oxide layer is a major paint hazard, making proper preparation and priming non-negotiable to prevent subsequent peeling.

The preparation process for aluminium requires careful, non-abrasive cleaning. Begin by washing the surface thoroughly with a premium degreaser, such as sugar soap, to remove environmental dirt, salt deposits, and oily residues. Rinse the surface completely with clean water and allow it to dry. Next, abrade the aluminium surface using a non-metallic scourer to scuff the oxide layer without gouging the soft metal. Avoid steel wool, as tiny iron particles can become embedded in the aluminium, leading to galvanic corrosion and rust spots. Wipe the surface clean of all dust and debris.

Once prepared, prime the bare aluminium with one coat of MetalPlus Etch Primer. Priming galvanised steel and zinc treated surfaces

To prepare new galvanised steel, Zincalume, or Zincanneal, you must thoroughly degrease the surface. Apply a solvent degreaser using a non-metallic scourer to break down the surface oils, then wash the metal with sugar soap. Rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry. For weathered galvanised surfaces that have been exposed to the elements for more than six months, the manufacturing oils will have naturally dissipated, but you must still wash the surface with sugar soap using a stiff bristle brush to remove accumulated salts and dirt.

Once the zinc-treated surface is clean and dry, apply the appropriate primer. Sound galvanised steel should be primed with one coat of MetalPlus Etch Primer to etch the zinc coating and ensure maximum adhesion. Repairing damaged galvanised steel with a zinc rich primer

When galvanised steel is cut, drilled, welded, or deeply scratched, the protective zinc barrier is breached, leaving the underlying raw steel exposed to moisture and rapid rusting. Standard primers are insufficient for these damaged areas, as they cannot restore the sacrificial protection that galvanised steel naturally provides.

To address these vulnerable spots, you must use a specialised zinc-rich paint, such as MetalPlus Cold Gal. Treating rusted steel and wrought iron before priming

While the ideal painting specification always requires stripping metal back to a clean, bare substrate, removing every trace of rust from deeply pitted steel or ornate wrought iron balustrades can be practically impossible. In these scenarios, any remaining rust must be chemically neutralised to prevent it from continuing to corrode beneath the new paint film.

For surfaces with minor, tight surface rust that remains after thorough wire brushing and sanding, we recommend treating the area with MetalPlus Rust Converter Primer Sealer. This water-based treatment performs a dual action: it chemically converts iron oxide into a stable, inert black organic complex while simultaneously sealing the surface to block out moisture and oxygen.

To apply the rust treatment, first use a wire brush or scraper to remove all loose, flaking rust and peeling paint. Sand the surrounding area to create a smooth transition, and wipe the surface clean. Apply one coat of MetalPlus Rust Converter Primer Sealer directly to the rusted areas using a brush. The liquid will dry to a stable, black finish within two to three hours.

This two-step method is the most reliable way to secure heavily weathered outdoor gates and garden furniture against future rust breakthroughs.

Priming previously painted metal surfaces

Working over previously painted metal surfaces requires a careful assessment of the existing coating to determine if you can apply a topcoat directly or if a full priming coat is required. The appropriate pathway depends entirely on the physical condition of the old paint.

If the existing paint is in sound condition, passing both the tape adhesion test and the compatibility test, a full primer is not required.
