Meet Maddox Fit, Melbourne’s futuristic health club

In 2020, Haymes Paint products, Expressions Interior Matt and Artisan Collection Sand were featured throughout the interior  design of Melbourne-based gym, Maddox Fit. Maddox Fit is a new entrant to Melbourne’s health and wellness community and has been exceptionally designed by architect and interior designer Kymberley Gim from Hecker Guthrie.Situated in a century-old building off Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s CBD, Maddox Fit uses a composition of futuristic materials such as stainless steel, glass and mirrors, as well as natural materials, including reclaimed timber and raw-textured wall surfaces.

At the entrance there is a bold heavy render, which was overcoated with Haymes Paint’s Expressions Interior Matt – a high-quality 100% acrylic that delivers superb coverage - in the Haymes colour ‘Exposure’.  With no added solvents, the product is 99% VOC free and virtually fume and odour free, which was necessary for the wellness centre.

Upon entry, guests walk through a gently blue-lit tunnel into a stunning reception space by local interior design firm Hecker Guthrie. Concrete walls were stippled with Haymes Paint Artisan Collection Sand which was custom matched to Haymes colour ‘Exposure’ and applied using roll-on application to achieve a high build finish.

Haymes Paints’ Artisan Collection Sand is an extremely versatile textured product capable of achieving unique and beautiful finishes through various application techniques, including cross hatch brushing, trowel and short and long nap rollers. Available in 12 colours, it is often colour matched for commercial projects, as is the case for Maddox Gym.

The gym’s sleek stainless-steel benchtop and glass-tiled back wall contrast with the original Baltic-pine floorboards. The reception also features an undulating, human-scale digital work by Melbourne artist Justin Ridler, creating a sleek gallery-like space.

The Haymes Paint products used in this project were specifically chosen to meet the client’s criteria of a low-VOC paint with a matte, light-textured finish. Haymes Paint’s Interior Expressions Matt Acrylic in ‘Exposure’ was used on the ceiling, AC conduit and as a topcoat over the existing render, contributing to the moody and contemporary design. Haymes Paint’s Artisan Collection Sand in the same shade was used throughout the gym area and on corridors to give a bespoke texture to walls with a handcrafted finish.

“In addition to movement as medicine, we wanted to explore how design can be used to nourish and restore our wellbeing,” co-founder Annie Nguyen told Broadsheet Melbourne. “Through design, we wanted to create a communicative space that is welcoming and inclusive (not intimidating), restorative and energising, immersive and experimental. We wanted to celebrate our city’s love for art and design.”

Maddox Fit skilfully uses interior design and Haymes Paint products to create a futuristic space focused on holistic health and physical movement.
