How to transform your interior space with texture and render coatings

Hospitality Retail

If you are looking to revitalise or transform an interior space by adding depth, warmth and intrigue, look no further than render and texture coatings.

Whether it be a single feature wall or an entire room, textured finishes are a popular interior trend that is here to stay. What’s more, they are affordable and easy to apply, making them a great option for professionals and everyday DIY homemakers alike.

"Using render and texture coatings is a wonderful way of adding drama and interest into a space, one that doesn’t require the cost of extra engineering which may be needed with the installation of brick or stone,” says Haymes Paint Architectural Colour Specifier and Interior Designer, Jo Clarke.

“Many people think the only way to achieve a natural and rustic feel inside their homes is by using stone, brick or other similar materials. Fortunately, that’s not the case. You can achieve this look with render and texture coatings, which are easy to apply and can completely transform a room.”

Why are texture and render coatings so popular?

While render and textured coatings have been popular for some time, it is a trend that is likely to continue well into 2022, especially given how well they pair with other materials.

“Given everything that is happening in the world right now, we are finding that people are increasingly seeking a feeling of safety and security in their homes,” says Jo.

“Render and texture coatings are an efficient and user-friendly way of achieving this effect, especially for targeted areas in the home such as feature walls.”

These versatile and intriguing finishes pair beautifully with a range of common materials like timber, linens, brass fittings, stainless steel and stone – making them a perfect choice to transform the feeling of a room while creating a beautiful contrast in an interior space.

A reprieve from our industrial, digital lives

It’s not only safety and security that comes with the proper use of render and texture coatings. They can also provide us with a much-needed escape from our digital worlds.

“Texture offers a natural, organic quality and connects us to a more innate design,” explains Hamish Guthrie, co-founding director of Melbourne design firm Hecker Guthrie.

“It grounds us back into a natural state that we’re more familiar with, offering comfort and depth to a space in a world that can feel increasingly industrialised.”

“I think this is why it’s growing in popularity – people are craving reprieve from shiny surfaces, flashing lights and screens.”

Hecker Guthrie recently teamed up with Haymes Paint to help transform its studio walls in Richmond, Melbourne. Using products from Haymes Paint’s Rendertex range, Hamish and his team were able to achieve a warm, inviting and natural effect.

“We wanted to tie the existing walls, floors and ceilings together as one, creating a neutral backdrop,” explains Hamish.

“We were after an all-encompassing spatial effect, creating a ‘blank canvas’ – a play in textures. From there, we inserted low-cost architectural petitions into the space to create purposeful division.”

“The effect has been very successful. It was an inexpensive construction technique that has created a sense of solidarity and depth with high impact.”

A move towards earthy tones

Just as interior paint colours go through trends, so do texture and render coatings – which can at times reflect the world around us.

“There is certainly a current trend towards earthy tones for render and texture coatings, a move away from cooler colours,” explains Jo.

“This could be a reflection on where we are globally, and how we want to feel in our spaces – nurtured and safe. Render and texture coatings are a great way to achieve that, as they are hard wearing.”

A stunning example of the impact of an earthy textured finish can have is boutique homeware store IN BED’s new concept store in Melbourne.

David Flack, Director of Flack Studio, led the store’s interior design in consultation with Jo and Haymes Paint. David used Haymes Paint’s Artisan Rendercoat for the walls, with a customised ‘Cave’ finish.

Combining natural materials with textured finishes, the result is a beautiful, earthy interior space that embraces warmth and safety, one that immediately generates customer interest and intrigue.
