A Coastal-Inspired Transformation Brought to Life Through Collaboration, Craft and Texture

Overlooking the waters of Corio Bay, the Bayside Geelong Hotel & Apartments has been transformed into a contemporary hospitality destination that celebrates the character, history and movement of the Geelong waterfront. ​

Designed by Peddle Thorpe and delivered through a close collaboration between Maben Group Builders, Hazik Coatings and Haymes Paint, the project draws inspiration from the region's coastal landscape and textile heritage, creating interiors rich in texture.​

Central to the design is Artisan Surface Bloom, Haymes Paint's premium decorative finish, specified across approximately 2,000m² of ceilings and feature surfaces throughout the hotel.

Working with Peddle Thorpe, the Haymes Paint team helped develop a customised finish palette comprising Natural Sand and bespoke colours Greyology 5 and Blue Beard. Applied across expansive meeting spaces, hallways and bar and food areas, the Artisan finish delivers subtle movement, tonal variation and depth that cannot be achieved with conventional flat paint systems.​

The effect is immediately apparent throughout the revitalised interiors. Large ceilings become a canvas for texture and light, drawing guests through the space while creating a refined, handcrafted aesthetic. 

The specification of Artisan Surface Bloom was driven by both design and performance outcomes. Its organic texture complements the hotel's palette of timber joinery, ceramics and soft furnishings while providing the durability required in a high-traffic hospitality environment.​

Interior Designer for the project, Abagail Hamm explains:​

"Artisan Surface Bloom was selected for its ability to reinforce the project's design narrative through materiality. Its organic movement and textured finish evoke the tidal nature of Geelong Bay while subtly referencing the tactility and movement of wool weaving from the region's textile heritage. Beyond its aesthetic contribution, it also offered a practical specification, combining long-term durability with strong value, making it well suited to the project."

The collaboration between Haymes Paint and Peddle Thorpe demonstrates how specialist finishes can contribute meaningfully to architectural storytelling. Rather than acting as a background element, Artisan Surface Bloom becomes a defining feature of the interior architecture, adding richness, depth and a distinctly local character throughout the hotel.
