A touch of nostalgia is brought to life at Sasso Italiano with the help of Haymes Paint

Hospitality Retail

Alongside Collectivus and SGB Group, Haymes Paint helped to create a casual-cool eatery in Queensland’s up and coming South City Square precinct.

The Venue

Sasso Italiano is Brisbane’s chicest new bar and trattoria in the Woolloongabba neighbourhood. Five days a week Sasso Italiano brings its customers old-school Italian dining that pairs perfectly alongside its natural wine and decadent Negroni menu. The space has been meticulously designed to bring visitors a cool contemporary feel, that ignites the senses and plays off the energetic Italian eateries that dotted the USA during the 70’s.

The Project

The project was undertaken by designer Emilia Kosiek of Collectivus in partnership with the construction team SGB Group. Haymes Paint assisted the team in creating a paint design for the Sasso Italiano trattoria which was then expertly applied by the SGB Group.

The paint finish worked to create impact and to bring an aspect of Emilia’s vision for the eatery to life. The application assistance and direction of the Haymes Paint team and the skill of the SGB Group ensured that the final result was executed to perfection.

The Product

To create this soft mottled finish,Haymes Paint Artisan Collection Scumble Mediumwas used. This product is the key to creating broken paint effects that cannot be achieved with standard broad wall paint alone. It was important for the overall nostalgic yet modern feel of Sasso Italiano‘s design to create a wall finish that emphasised the coolness of the space and played against the texture of the stone.

The Application

To achieve this aged Italian look, two coats of Haymes Paint Expressions Low Sheen Acrylic were applied in the colour Milkweed half strength. Once fully dry, the Scumble Wash was mixed using one-part Haymes Paint Low Sheen Acrylic in Soft Brown, two parts Scumble Medium and six parts water.

The Scumble Wash was applied by brush in a criss-cross technique over the base colour, then a large ball of soft muslin was rolled and dabbed over the wash to create the mottled finish. The result is the interplay between the lighter basecoat and the darker transparent Scumble wash.

The Sasso Italiano project exemplifies how layering traditional paint with a speciality product such as Haymes Paint Artisan Collection Scumble Medium, can create a unique timeless finish that adds depth and warmth to a space.
