Painting A Room By Yourself  - How Long Does It Take?

Can you paint a room in one day? The answer is yes if you’re prepared. But how long it takes to paint a room by yourself will depend on how big the room is, whether you’re painting the whole room or just part of it, how detailed the painting is and whether you’ll need more than one coat of paint. Ensuring you have everything you need on the day will also save you time and ensure the project goes smoothly. However, here is a general breakdown of how long it takes to paint a room by yourself:

  1. Preparation: approx. 1-2 hours
  2. Preparing the room and the surfaces you’re painting is an important step. In terms of preparing the room, you’ll need to move furniture away from the walls, cover the floor, remove fixtures if necessary & any items on the walls and cover baseboards and frames with painter's tape.
  3. Outlining / cutting in: approx. 1 hour
  4. Next, you’ll need to outline the areas that you won't be able to get to with the roller (e.g. corners, edges, around remaining fixtures and frames).
  5. Applying the paint: approx. 2-3 hours
  6. Using a roller will make painting the walls much quicker (you’ll need a brush for the outlining / cutting in though) The time it takes to paint the walls can be reduced by using a larger roller but you may still need a smaller roller to get into smaller areas. An extension rod will make it much easier and quicker to get to the up-high areas too. If you require more than one coat, you’ll need to wait until the first coat is completely dry before applying the next one - which can extend the time it takes to get the job done considerably. If you need to use a primer, this will of course add on more time too.
  7. Cleaning up: approx. 30 min to 1 hour
  8. Remove painter’s tape, pack away any ground sheets and pack away your paints (ensure the seals are put on properly). Ensure you wait for the paint to dry properly before putting furniture and fixtures back.
