Is There a Best Time of Year to Paint Your House?

Whether you’re looking to revamp your home's interior or spruce up the exterior, choosing the right time to paint can be as important as choosing the right paint. In Australia, the climate can vary significantly so knowing the best conditions for painting is important to achieve a long-lasting, professional finish. We understand the importance of timing in painting and are here to guide you through the perfect times and temperatures for your next painting project.

Best Temperature for Exterior Painting

When it comes to exterior painting, the weather is perhaps the most important factor to consider before starting. We all know rain and wet surfaces won’t allow paint to adhere properly, but it’s also important to choose a time when the weather is not too cold (Below 10°C), hot (Above 35°C), windy, or humid (above 85%).

  • Below 10°C: Solvent-based paints struggle to dry in cold conditions, while water-based paints may not dry at all. The cold can also cause the paint to bubble or crack, compromising both its appearance and durability.
  • Above 35°C: Excessively hot conditions can cause the paint to dry too quickly and unevenly, as well as making paint adhesion more difficult. If painting in hot weather, dampening the surface slightly with clean water can aid in the application, especially for porous surfaces using water-based paint.
  • Humidity Above 85%: Many paints have a limit of 70% humidity and will not cure correctly above this, 40-50% humidity is ideal for exterior painting.
  • High Wind: Wind can lead to uneven drying, debris in your painting, and even unsafe painting conditions for you.

Ideal Conditions for Interior Painting

Interior painting is a bit more flexible when it comes to temperature, but it’s still wise to paint in moderate conditions. The best time of year for interior painting is during late spring or early autumn, when temperatures and humidity are more controlled. High humidity levels indoors can lead to longer drying times and potential mould issues so it’s important you always paint with proper ventilation. Time of Day and Efficiency

The time of day matters too. For both interior and exterior painting, mid-morning to early afternoon is ideal. This allows the paint to dry evenly and reduces the likelihood of overnight dew affecting the finish.
