Industrial Products FAQs
What Are Industrial Coatings?Â
An industrial coating is a paint (or coating) that is formulated to protect the surface it’s painted on from things like corrosion rather than just focusing on its aesthetic properties. Industrial coatings are made so they effectively adhere to industrial surfaces such as steel or concrete.Â
Why Use Industrial Coatings?Â
Industrial coatings are designed to adhere to industrial surfaces such as steel or aluminium. They are used to protect equipment from corrosion such as rust or chemical corrosion and abrasion - promoting longevity. Industrial coatings are more robust as often the surfaces they are applied to can also cause corrosion over time. Industrial coatings are also often a requirement for safety & compliance standards.Â
What Types Of Industrial Coatings Are There?Â
With industrial coatings, there are three main product types – Topcoats, primers and preparation products. Within each of those product types (mainly topcoats and primers), there is a wide variety of options as each product is tailored for specific industrial applications or surfaces. We have a wide choice of industrial coating topcoats and primers within our range with a wax & grease remover and a cleaner in our range of industrial coating preparation products.Â
What To Look For In An Industrial Topcoat Paint?Â
The first and most important thing to look out for is to ensure the industrial topcoat you choose is compatible with the surface you are painting. You want to ensure the top coat has good adhesion and appropriate protective qualities. If you have safety compliance requirements check the manufacturers' specifications. You can also speak to a member of our customer service team or your local Haymes Paint stockist to ensure you choose the right product for your application. Quick dry products such as our Quick Dry Enamel are also ideal for turnaround time or if minimising downtime is a factor. Â
What Are Industrial Paint Primers?Â
Industrial paint primers are the first coat that you apply to a surface you are painting. They are formulated so they can be applied to industrial surfaces such as aluminium, galvanised steel and previously painted substrates.Â
They go under the top coat to prepare the surface, ensuring adequate adhesion of the top coat and also providing protection against corrosion. Different industrial primers are used depending on the surface being painted, the surrounding environment and the topcoat you are using. Universal industrial paint primers can be used for a wider range of applications whereas an industrial paint primer such as our Zinc Phosphate industrial paint primer is designed specifically for industrial use and has excellent adhesion to mild steel.Â
How Do You Prepare The Surface Before Applying Industrial Paint Primers?Â
Preparation of the surface may differ depending on the surface you are painting, the condition it’s in, the industrial paint primer you are using and whether there are safety or industry compliance requirements that need to be adhered to. Generally speaking, you need to ensure all surfaces are clean, bare, dry and free of dust, wax, grease etc before applying the industrial paint primer. We recommend using our Wax & Grease remover and Antistatic Cleaner that have been formulated for industrial coating solutions to adequately prepare the surface (we always advise following the manufacturer's instructions).
