Surface preparation protocols for a lasting finish

Before starting your project, follow these mandatory preparation steps:

1. Curing times

Never paint fresh masonry too early. New concrete, cement render, brickwork, and mortar joints must be left to cure for a minimum of 28 days before paint application. Painting over uncured cement traps highly alkaline moisture, which will chemically destroy the paint binder.

2. Substrate cleaning

Thoroughly clean the surface using a high-pressure water washer. This process must remove all accumulated dirt, dust, loose sand, grease, mould, and powdery efflorescence salts. Allow the surface to dry completely.

3. Tilt-up and precast concrete preparation

Structural precast panels are manufactured using chemical mould release agents to slide the concrete out of the casting beds. These chemical bond-breakers must be completely removed, or no paint will adhere. Clean the panels using Rendertex Tilt Panel Prep, followed by a hot-pressure water wash. Test the dry surface in several areas by splashing water on it. If the water beads, chemical residues are still present, and the cleaning process must be repeated. Once water no longer beads, apply one coat of Rendertex Masonry Sealer to secure the substrate.

4. Moisture testing

Trapping moisture behind an elastomeric membrane is a guaranteed recipe for paint failure. To check if your wall is dry, perform the moisture plastic sheet test. Tape a 300mm x 300mm piece of clear plastic tightly over multiple areas of the wall, ensuring the edges are completely sealed. On exterior walls, place these test panels in direct sunlight. Leave the plastic in place for at least two hours. If condensation appears under the plastic or if the masonry underneath has darkened, the wall is still damp and requires more drying time. If you use a professional moisture meter, the masonry must return a moisture content reading of less than 14% before you proceed.

5. Existing paint assessment

If you are repainting a previously painted rendered wall, you must determine if the old finish is structurally sound. Perform the adhesion test by cutting a light "X" through the paint layer using a utility knife. Press a strip of strong adhesive tape firmly over the cut, then pull it off sharply. If any of the old paint sticks to the tape, the previous finish has failed and must be completely removed by scraping, sanding, or chemical stripping.

If the paint remains intact, perform the compatibility test. Sand and clean a small, inconspicuous area, apply one coat of your chosen Rendertex topcoat, and let it dry for 24 hours. Conduct another tape adhesion test over this new coat. If the tape removes the paint, the old and new layers are incompatible, meaning you must apply a specialised undercoat or strip the wall back to bare render.
