How to Stop Paint Cracking, Flaking, Blistering & Bubbling
Painting the interior and exterior of your home is one of the most transformative tools you have as a homeowner. When you apply paint, you give your house a fresh, updated look so it feels like new again. To know how to stop paint cracking, how to stop paint flaking, how to stop paint bubbling or how to stop paint blistering, preparation is key.
How To Stop Paint Cracking
A crack in your paint can start small but quickly grow into a large crack. From a hairline crack to flakes of paint peeling off, if you know how to stop paint cracking or how to stop paint flaking, you can stop this happening. The reasons why paint cracks can occur include:
- Low-quality paint was used
- The paint wasn’t applied thoroughly and with precision
- The paint is old
- An oil-based paint was applied over an enamel paint
- Primer wasn’t applied before painting
To know how to stop paint cracking or how to stop paint flaking, you can simply remove the paint with a wire brush or scraper. We suggest you feather the edges of the crack before priming the spots and it to dry. If the cracking paint goes deeper than the substrate, you’ll need to remove the entire layer of paint before priming and resurfacing.
How To Stop Paint Blistering
Paint blistering is caused when newly applied paint detaches from the surface forming a blister or bubble-like bump. By taking preventative measures on how to stop paint blistering (e.g. not painting directly in the sunlight or making sure no moisture is pushing the paint off the surface of the wall) you can ensure a good paint finish. Paint blistering can also be caused if:
- There has been contamination of the surface before a new film of paint being applied
- Poor substrate preparation where old paint and/or unsound paint hasn’t been eliminated
- Solvents being trapped beneath the painting surface before a new film of paint being applied
How To Stop Paint Bubbling
Knowing how to stop paint bubbling on walls begins with understanding why paint bubbling occurs. Paint bubbling occurs when the paint film has lifted away from the underlying surface due to a lack of adhesion. Paint bubbles occur because:
- The paint has been applied when the room temperature is too hot (over 32 degrees Celsius) or too cold (below 10 degrees Celsius)
- The surface wasn’t prepared well before the paint was applied
- Just after the paint dried it was exposed to moisture
- The paint was applied on a humid day
- An oil-based paint was applied over enamel paint
To prevent paint bubbles, we suggest you thoroughly dry the paint surface before painting.
How To Prevent Paint Peeling From Walls
How to stop paint from peeling off walls begins with proper surface preparation. Ensure the surface is clean and that you use the right primer. How to prevent paint peeling from walls over time includes protecting the paint surface from exposure to water, heat, corrosive substances and sunlight. Controlling humidity and condensation will also help when it comes to knowing how to stop paint from peeling off walls.
