Timber is beautiful, but it’s vulnerable. Without the right care, it weathers quickly, losing both its colour and structural integrity. Sun fades and dries the surface, moisture invites mould, and temperature shifts can lead to cracking. Over time, these effects shorten the life of your timber. Common risks include:

  • UV damage – fades colour and dries fibres.
  • Moisture exposure – promotes swelling, warping, and mould growth.
  • Abrasion – wears away protective layers, leaving timber exposed.

  • Exterior furniture, pergolas, cladding, trims – UVEX Finish: satin sheen, enhances natural timber, recoat in 2 hours.
  • Traditional oiled look for outdoor pieces – Decking Oil: penetrates deeply, resists mould and algae, will not crack or peel, recoat in 6 hours.

Preparation essentials for success

  1. Check the forecast and apply between 10°C and 35°C in dry conditions.
  2. Clean thoroughly to remove dirt, mould, and any flaking coatings.
  3. Sand as needed to promote even penetration and adhesion.
  4. For exterior joinery, use UVEX Primer for adhesion, water repellence, and mould resistance, then topcoat with UVEX Finish within 7 days.

Application tips and mistakes to avoid

Do this

  • Apply thin, even coats with a brush, lambswool applicator, or deck brush.
  • Recoat at the correct time: 2 hours for Dexpress and UVEX Finish, 6 hours for Decking Oil.
  • Work along the grain for consistent coverage.

Avoid this

  • Applying too thickly, which can cause uneven drying.
  • Coating in hot, direct sun.
  • Using the wrong clean-up method: water for water-based, mineral turpentine for oil-based.
