How to Choose and Apply Wood Stain for Lasting Timber Beauty
Since 1935, Haymes Paint has been refining the craft of premium coatings. We are still proudly Australian made and owned, and remain a family business in our fourth generation. That means we value quality, integrity, and the satisfaction of seeing a job done right.
Our Woodcare range is purpose-built for Australian conditions. Whether you’re protecting a deck from summer sun, restoring an outdoor table, or bringing warmth to interior trims, there’s a Haymes solution to match. We offer both water-based and oil-based products, each designed to enhance and protect timber while making application as straightforward as possible.
Why your timber needs protection
Timber is beautiful, but it’s vulnerable. Without the right care, it weathers quickly, losing both its colour and structural integrity. Sun fades and dries the surface, moisture invites mould, and temperature shifts can lead to cracking. Over time, these effects shorten the life of your timber. Common risks include:
- UV damage – fades colour and dries fibres.
- Moisture exposure – promotes swelling, warping, and mould growth.
- Abrasion – wears away protective layers, leaving timber exposed.
A quality stain shields against these threats, helping timber keep its strength and appearance for far longer.
The benefits of staining your timber
Applying stain offers practical and aesthetic rewards:
- Enhances natural beauty – highlights grain and colour depth.
- Extends lifespan – Dexpress Deck & Timber Stain lasts up to three times longer than traditional decking oils.
- Defends against mould and algae – ideal for damp or shaded areas.
- Nourishes timber fibres – reducing the risk of splitting.
- Reduces downtime – water-based options allow two coats in a single day and clean up with water.
Water-based and oil-based stains compared
| Feature | Water-based (e.g. Dexpress Deck & Timber Stain) | Oil-based (e.g. Decking Oil) |
| Dry time | Touch dry in 30 minutes | Longer to dry |
| Recoat time | 2 hours | 6 hours |
| Clean-up | Water | Mineral turpentine |
| Durability | Hard-wearing; quicker maintenance cycles | Deep penetration; rich nourishment |
| Finish | Low sheen or satin | Natural matt |
| Recommended uses | High-traffic decks, cladding, trims, furniture | Traditional look for decks and outdoor pieces |
Â
In summary, choose water-based when speed, low odour, and ease of clean-up matter most. Opt for oil-based when you want deep timber penetration and a classic, natural look.

Preparation essentials for success
- Check the forecast and apply between 10°C and 35°C in dry conditions.
- Clean thoroughly to remove dirt, mould, and any flaking coatings.
- Sand as needed to promote even penetration and adhesion.
- For exterior joinery, use UVEX Primer for adhesion, water repellence, and mould resistance, then topcoat with UVEX Finish within 7 days.
Application tips and mistakes to avoid
Do this
- Apply thin, even coats with a brush, lambswool applicator, or deck brush.
- Recoat at the correct time: 2 hours for Dexpress and UVEX Finish, 6 hours for Decking Oil.
- Work along the grain for consistent coverage.
Avoid this
- Applying too thickly, which can cause uneven drying.
- Coating in hot, direct sun.
- Using the wrong clean-up method: water for water-based, mineral turpentine for oil-based.
Common concerns answered
Is stain high-maintenance? Not with the right product. Dexpress lasts up to three times longer than traditional decking oils, reducing upkeep.
Will it look unnatural? UVEX Finish provides a refined satin sheen, while Decking Oil delivers a soft, natural matt.
Is clean-up a hassle? Water-based stains wash up easily with water; oil-based products require mineral turpentine.
