Bringing Script Skincare’s third store to life

When bespoke skincare company Script Skincare decided to open its third Melbourne store, it only made sense that it would use Haymes Paint products to bring the space to life.

Having used the iconic paint brand for its previous two stores – one of which won the award for ‘Retail Design’ by the Australian Interior Design Awards 2020 – Script knew it was in safe hands.

Located in Emporium, a major shopping precinct in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, it was important that Script’s new space was sleek and modern to draw bustling city-goers into the store.

In conjunction with one of Australia’s leading design firms, Hecker Guthrie, and specialist applicator, M.A.N. Painting Management, Haymes Paint and the team got to work.

The Design

Hecker Guthrie led the design of Script’s third store. The goal was to achieve something a little more pared back in terms of colour and finish from Script’s first two stores, which meant that finding the right style and colour was essential.

Inspired by the ‘Light Render’ look, Hecker Guthrie ultimately opted for a texture-based sand coating with a high profile to compliment the bespoke nature of Script’s business.

Haymes Paint Artisan Sand wound up to be the perfect product for the job, popular for its authentic and ‘handcrafted’ finish, which helps create a soft and comforting environment, particularly for indoor spaces.

Products Used

Using a custom ‘Misty Grey’ colour, Haymes Paint Artisan Sand was used throughout the main showroom of the new store to evoke sleek and clean atmosphere.

Haymes Paint Artisan Sand

Artisan Sand is a water-based textured paint, with minimal odour and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Low VOC is particularly important for indoor paint and surface coatings, as they prevent any reduction in air quality and pollution.

Artisan Sand is ready to repaint between six and 12 hours (depending on the application tool), and touch-dry in two hours. As the paint is durable and hardwearing, it is perfect for high traffic spaces and stores such as Emporium Melbourne. It’s also suitable for both indoor and exterior surfaces, both commercial and residential.

“The paint, used in most of the Emporium store’s wall spaces, created a strong background tone that complimented the custom joinery and lighting in the space,” said Hecker Guthrie Director, Kymberley Gim.

“The specified colour (Misty Grey) works very well with the branding and complements the key feature items within the space.”

Haymes Paint Ultra Premium Expressions (Low Sheen)

In conjunction with Artisan Sand, Hecker Guthrie opted for Haymes Paint Ultra Premium Expressions (Low Sheen) in the consulting suites and kitchen located in the back of the store.

Expressions (Low Sheen) provides strong coverage and is a highly durable paint, ensuring the store is future-proof and well protected from damage. Expressions paints were also used on the store’s ceiling to evoke harmony and consistency, tying the store together visually.

The application process

Correct application is essential when using Haymes Paint Artisan Sand to achieve consistent colour and texture.

First and foremost, it is important to repeatedly stir the paint throughout the application process, as otherwise the sand granules will settle to the bottom of the can and there will be no sand texture.

There are many application tools you can use for Artisan Sand, including brush, roller, mitt and trowel. Regardless of what option you choose, it’s always recommended that a sample application be conducted prior to undertaking any Artisan Sand project to ensure consistency in finish.

For this project, Artisan Sand was applied via a roller brush. In most cases, a medium-long nap synthetic roller can be used, depending on the desired texture. When applying via roller, it’s important to dilute up to 70ml of clean water per litre of paint to achieve the desired effect. What’s more, it’s important to apply only one or two coats using the same application technique to ensure consistency.

Given the many application methods available, and the importance of getting it right, Haymes Paint provided on-site support to M.A.N Painting Management for the Script Skincare project, particularly given Artisan Sand’s high sand profile.

“Haymes Paint products often provide consistent colours and textures, and the application process was simple to follow – so it was easy for the painter to achieve the right texture that we wanted,” said Ms Gim.

The result

Through a collaborative approach – and proper application of Haymes Paint’s Artisan Sand – Hecker Guthrie, M.A.N. Painting Management and Haymes Paint achieved a comforting oasis for shoppers.

The new Script Skincare store is warm and inviting to customers, delivering some colour to Emporium Melbourne’s modern design.

Importantly, the beauty of working with Haymes Paint products goes beyond their incredible quality and creativity. That’s because Haymes Paint’s knowledgeable team of experts are always readily available to share their passion and expertise.

“Theresa Watters (Haymes Paint National Specifier Manager) and the team were a valuable asset, helping to specify the right product and reviewing samples to make the best decisions for the project,” said Ms Gim.
