Boundless Blue

Made by using a high load of pigment concentrated near the surface, to maximise its direct interaction with light. The result is a luminous, highly saturated blue with depth and movement.

Boundless Blue is an exclusive online release.

Ultramarine Reimagined

At Haymes Paint, we’ve reimagined ultramarine blue with a pioneering surface-localised pigment technique to create Boundless Blue, a vivid, limited edition hue that maximises light interaction for unmatched depth and saturation.

By concentrating pigment at the surface rather than embedding it in the binder, we enhance optical effects like scattering and reflection, resulting in a luminous, almost glowing blue. Designed as a bold, artful statement for carefully chosen spaces, this formulation transforms ultramarine into an immersive visual experience, celebrating innovation, artistic expression, and the legacy of colour in a striking, intimate way.

Limited Release

The first release will be limited to only 200 x 1 litre cans. Each will be made and hand poured in the Haymes Paint laboratory, offering an opportunity to own this exclusive colour.

A Legacy in Pigment & Possibility

Derived from the precious Lapis Lazuli stone, ultramarine was once more valuable than gold and sourced solely from Afghanistan. In 1824, a synthetic version called French ultramarine was created after a fierce competition between chemist Jean Baptiste Guimet and professor Christian Gmelin. Decades later, artist Yves Klein developed International Klein Blue, a vivid and immaterial blue rooted in ultramarine pigment, with one of his monochromes recently selling for over three million pounds.

Now, with Haymes Paint’s Boundless Blue, customers can experience this iconic colour, crafted using the same ultramarine pigment and high pigment load, unavailable in standard paint shop formulations.

A Statement of Excellence

This limited-edition product celebrates creative thinking, artistic expression and innovation. It is not intended for everyday wear but rather to be experienced as a unique art piece in a small, carefully selected space on a wall. Boundless Blue is designed to be appreciated for its depth and colour, creating a subtle focal point that encourages reflection. It is as much about the experience of the pigment as it is about the space it inhabits. This product offers a chance to engage with the legacy of ultramarine blue in a new, intimate way, capturing a quiet moment of boldness on your wall.

Ultramarine blue has a fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. It was the only source of this vibrant blue hue until the 19th century. Its rarity and labour-intensive production meant it was extremely valuable, often more than gold. This made ultramarine blue an extremely costly pigment in the art world. It was reserved for the most important elements of a painting, such as the robes of the Virgin Mary in Renaissance masterpieces, Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring".

Design, at its best, is an act of hope, a belief that how we live can be shaped by how we dream. In colour, as in design, we seek not merely function, but the sensations that form our experience of space: feeling, beauty, and the quiet resonance of light.
