Quick Tips to Overhaul Your Living Room

We often hear that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but as the temperatures hit freezing it is no surprise that we find ourselves more drawn to cuddling up on a cosy couch than cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

If your living room isn’t giving off that homey winter feeling that you are pining after, here are our top tips for a living room overhaul.

Accent Wall
Panelling is back and in a big way. No longer reminiscent of the wood panelling that overtook homes in the 60s and 70s, contemporary panelling adds interest, dimension and an architectural feature to any space, especially when used on an accent wall.

This feature wall was painted in Haymes Mimosa Leaf, a green that our Colour and Concept Manager Wendy Rennie says is the perfect blend of refreshing and soothing. This subtle hue offers a connection to nature and our environment, perfect for the time of year when we want to bring the outside in, and easily achieving that contemporary log cabin feel that is perfect for a winter makeover.

Texture
Winter is the perfect time of year to move away from the minimalism movement and layer up on textures. Soft furnishings, blankets and rugs are an easy (and temporary) way to change up your space and make it feel more like a winter wonderland.

Wendy says that teaming this feature wall with lighter woods, leather and linens gives a sense of a well-rounded space that is harmonious and easy to be in. When used in bedrooms you can use softer materials like velvet, wool and textures to make the look and feel of the space more intimate.

Lighting
With the days so short that we barely feel like we are seeing the sunlight, getting the lighting right in your living spaces is key. Floor and table lamps are a great way to even out the lighting in space, and also to create a sense of moodiness and cosiness when overhead lighting is turned off. This might be one of the few cases where less isn’t more!

Open Shelving
An overhaul wouldn’t be an overhaul without some reorganisation, especially considering that living rooms can tend to be a place where ‘stuff’ accumulates - books, magazines, photographs, knick-knacks, you name it!

Given that winter is the time of year where you might finally pick up that book that you’ve been meaning to read, it would be a shame to hide these things away. The perfect storage solution? Open-shelving. Keeping both functional, beautiful and also meaningful items on display allows for organisation without creating a clinical atmosphere and keeps your most used items readily available.
